Rock legends put on 6-hour Sandy benefit show

Updated at 1:25 a.m. ET: Rock legends ranging from Roger Waters to The Rolling Stones to Paul McCartney with Nirvana joined together Wednesday night for a massive six-hour concert to raise money for the Robin Hood Relief Fund benefiting victims of superstorm Sandy.

The musicians set a serious tone, wearing mostly black and gray onstage as they encouraged people to call and donate money to help those affected by the devastating storm that killed at least 140 people and destroyed or damaged homes and properties in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut and other areas.

Alicia Keys, who grew up in Manhattan's Hell's Kitchen, closed the show with her New York anthem "Empire State of Mind," as doctors, nurses, firefighters, police officers and others joined the piano-playing singer onstage. They ended the night chanting "U.S.A."

Keys was one of two women who performed at "The Concert for Sandy Relief." Diana Krall backed McCartney, who sang his solo songs, Beatles songs and played the role of Kurt Cobain with Nirvana members Dave Grohl, Krist Novoselic and Pat Smear.?

Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band kicked off the concert with "Land of Hope and Dreams," and followed it up with "Wrecking Ball."?

"Tonight, this is a prayer for all of our struggling brothers and sisters," Springsteen said. After performing a third song, the rocker brought out Jon Bon Jovi, and the pair sang "Born to Run" together.

"I can't believe that Bruce Springsteen is my opening act," Billy Crystal joked after the set. "You can feel the electricity in the building, which means Long Island Power isn't involved." He also reminded viewers about the devastation the storm left behind. "More than 100 people died ... entire neighborhoods wiped out. ... Tonight with your help, we are going to emerge stronger than before."

Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, who recently toured with his show "Roger Waters The Wall Live," performed "In the Flesh" and "Another Brick in the Wall" from the band's classic album. He then launched into "Money" and "Us and Them" from "Dark Side of the Moon."?

Pearl Jam's Eddie Vedder then joined the group for "Comfortably Numb," taking turns on the lyrics with Waters.?

Adam Sandler then took the stage with Paul Shaffer on piano for a little fun, with the comedian tweaking the lyrics to "Hallelujah" to suit the evening. "Hallelujah, Sandy screw ya! We'll get through you, 'cause we're New Yorkers!"?the duo sang.

During the show, celebrities -- including Susan Sarandon,?Ben Stiller and?Jake Gyllenhaal?-- manned the phone bank to handle call-in donations. There were so many stars there to help, "You can't swing a dead cat without hitting a celebrity," Brian Williams joked during the concert.

"Twilight" star Kristen Stewart also made an appearance to urge viewers to donate. She reminded the audience of the massive amount of damage that the storm left behind. "Now is your chance to be Jersey Strong with us," she said before introducing Bon Jovi's performance.?The Jersey native kicked off his set with "It's My Life."?

"When this storm hit, we all knew that the healing process would be beginning, but that it was going to take a long time," the rocker said. "(The performers) knew the people we were doing it for wouldn't be able to hear us, to see us. ... This recovery is not going to be quick. ... But we are strong. We are New York. We are New Jersey."

Eric Clapton also delivered an energetic set of his own that included "Nobody Knows When You're Down and Out" and "Crossroad Blues."

He was followed by The Rolling Stones, who were introduced by Jimmy Fallon. Frontman Mick Jagger encouraged the crowd to dance and cheer as the band launched into "You Got Me Rocking" and the singer showed off his own slinky moves.

"This has got to be the largest collection of old English musicians ever assembled in Madison Square Garden," Jagger later joked of the night's lineup.

Comedian Stephen Colbert also added to the humor. He said that when Sir Paul McCartney asked him for advice on being cool, he told the musician to lose the hair cut and the accent. Colbert then pointed out that helping is also cool. So cool, in fact, that it's like "doing a line of uncut goodwill" and that donating "is the new skinny jeans."

New Yorker Alicia Keys later delivered an emotion-packed performance, first with new tune "Brand New Me" then "No One." After the two-song set, she said, "My city, New York City, is the most resilient city."

After the slower set, The Who kicked things back into high gear with an energetic performance of "Who Are You?" during which singer Roger Daltrey seemingly dropped an F-bomb. While performing "Bell Boy," the band showed video of drummer Keith Moon, who died in 1978. Images and videos switched to those of the storm's destruction during "See Me, Feel Me." They ended their long set with "Tea and Theater" and a loud expletive for beer instead.?

Pa. couple forced dogs to 'fight and win, or die,' DA says

Charges were announced Wednesday morning against a Chester County, Pa., couple accused of running a major dogfighting operation out of their home on Manor Road in West Brandywine.

Prosecutors say Shane Santiago and his wife were running the operation while their five children lived at the home. Officials say the couple raised pit bulls, trained them on treadmills and gave them steroid-type medicines to make them stronger. They then taught the dogs to kill other dogs, according to prosecutors.

Chester County District Attorney Tom Hogan said the couple had the stronger dogs practice on weaker dogs. Dogfighters from other states allegedly came to their home and watched the dogs fight, often to the death. While the winning dogs were taken home, the losing dogs either died in the ring or were killed by the owners, according to prosecutors.

Hogan said officials recovered jumper cables with hair on them in Santiago?s basement. Santiago allegedly used the cables to electrocute the dogs.

"The dogs lived by one rule," said Hogan. "Fight and win, or die. At least 10 dogs died by defendant Shane Santiago?s hands, and countless more were maimed in these dogfights."

Hogan said authorities were alerted to the possibility of dogfighting in the western part of Chester County when they received reports of dead and mutilated pit bulls along roadsides over the last few months.

Officials originally targeted Santiago as part of a drug operation, which eventually led them to the dogfighting connection, according to investigators. Santiago and his wife were both charged with animal cruelty and child endangerment. They are in custody.

Facebook takes down Taliban recruiter page

Facebook removed a page set up?by the Taliban in Pakistan, after a monitoring group reported on its existence as a fresh example of a social media tool being?used for the recruitment of terrorists.

SITE, a non-governmental organization that monitors terrorist propaganda online and how terrorist groups use the Internet, called attention?on Dec. 3?to the Facebook page that belonged to Umar Media TTP, the media arm of the?Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

Noted was Umar Media's?October posting?for "online job opportunities" for "video editing, translations, sharing, uploading, downloading and collection of required data."?

Then, in late November, page administrators posted a new item seeking writers, SITE said in its?report. The Facebook?solicitation said, in part:

Dear brothers and sisters 'Pen is mightier than the sowrd [sic]' Now you have a chance to use this mighty weapon.

?'AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT' is an official quarterly magazine of 'TEHREEEK-E-TALIBAN PAKISTAN'.

?Would you like to be a writer for 'AHYAH-E-KHILAFAT'?

"Umar Media's recruitment drive highlights the extent to which Jihadist groups recruit online as well as the professionalism of Jihadist propaganda production houses," SITE said in its report.

The page,?which Facebook took offline in the past few weeks,?has not been the only Taliban-related one on Facebook???there are others, including one supportive of the Afghanistan Taliban and another about Taliban news?(neither of which appear to be very active).

A Facebook spokesperson told NBC News in an email that the social network ? with more than 1 billion users worldwide now ? does have rules that "bar direct statements of hate, attacks on private individuals and groups and the promotion of terrorism."

"We have?a large team of professional investigators both in the U.S. and abroad who enforce these rules," the spokesperson said.?

"Where abusive content is posted and reported, Facebook removes it and disables accounts of those responsible. Whenever we become aware of possible violations of our terms, we will investigate these instances and take action if violations of our statements of rights and responsibilities take place."

Facebook, however, will not comment on specific pages, other than to tell NBC News: "Yes,?we have removed the page."

The?SITE report suggested that the group knew it might not stay visible?on Facebook. "Knowing that their Facebook account may be taken down,?the call for contributors was also posted on a page for the 'Ghaza-E-Hind'?Facebook group." That group?no longer appears to be on the social network, either.

The Pew Research Center's new report about social networking worldwide says that those in Arab countries are more likely than others around the globe?to use sites like Facebook and Twitter to talk politics and religion, finding freedom of expression?flowing more easily online than in real life, although several?Middle Eastern countries having squelched Internet use at various times in recent years.

In more recent months, online propaganda campaigns?even monitored the moment-by-moment actions of war in the Israel-Gaza conflict.

"It's a new method (of propaganda) added onto other methods,"?Charles Ries,?former ambassador to Greece and vice president of the international division of the?RAND Corporation,?told NBC News at that time. "Both?sides combine whatever they do in kinetic fashion with an effort to mobilize international opinion."

FDA OKs J&J prostate cancer drug for pre-chemo use

(Reuters) - U.S. health regulators on Monday expanded the approval of Johnson & Johnson's drug Zytiga for advanced prostate cancer to allow its use prior to treatment with chemotherapy.

The widely-expected, expanded Food and Drug Administration approval, which came after the company demonstrated that Zytiga could extend survival if used prior to chemotherapy, is likely to significantly boost sales of the new medicine.

Wells Fargo Securities analyst Larry Biegelsen, in a research note earlier this year, forecast peak Zytiga sales of $2.3 billion in 2016, with about 70 percent coming from pre-chemo use.

Zytiga was originally approved in April 2011 for use in combination with the steroid prednisone to treat men whose prostate cancer had progressed following treatment with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel.

The pill, which works by decreasing production of the hormone testosterone that fuels cancer growth, had sales of about $800 million in its first year of availability, capturing some 60 percent of the post-chemotherapy market.

That market share is likely to shrink due to new competition in the post-chemotherapy setting from Xtandi, which is sold by Medivation Inc and Astellas Pharma Inc, analysts said. Xtandi is still undergoing late stage trials in patients who have not yet received chemotherapy treatment and the drug could be a year or two away from a similar expanded approval.

However, Sanford Bernstein analyst Geoffrey Porges said Xtandi was likely to gain some "off label" use in pre-chemo patients. The term refers to doctors prescribing drugs for none-approved uses.

"Ultimately we are convinced that Xtandi will get a comparable or better label expansion by mid 2014," he said.

Meanwhile, Zytiga patients starts will get "an immediate boost," Porges added.

In late stage clinical trials of more than 1,000 patients with advanced prostate cancer who had not been treated with chemotherapy, those who received Zytiga on average lived more than five months longer than those who received a placebo.

"Today's approval demonstrates the benefit of further evaluating a drug in an earlier disease setting and provides patients and health care providers the option of using Zytiga earlier in the course of treatment," Richard Pazdur, director of the Office of Oncology Drug Products in the FDA's Center for Drug Evaluation and Research, said in a statement.

The American Cancer Society estimated that more than 28,000 U.S. men will die from prostate cancer in 2012, making it the second leading cause of cancer death behind lung cancer.

J&J shares closed up 15 cents at $70.60 on the New York Stock Exchange.

Taliban attack Pakistan police station, kill 6

BANNU, Pakistan (AP) ? Taliban militants armed with a rocket, hand grenades and automatic weapons attacked a police station in northwestern Pakistan on Monday, killing six people, police said.

The attack occurred in the city of Bannu, which serves as a gateway to the North Waziristan tribal area, the main sanctuary for Taliban and al-Qaida militants in Pakistan. The city has been hit by repeated attacks over the year.

The militants began the attack by firing a rocket at the gate of the police station and tossing hand grenades, triggering a battle with police last lasted over an hour, said senior police officer Wagar Ahmed.

Three policemen and three civilians were killed in the attack, said Ahmed. The civilians were coming out of a nearby mosque when they were shot by the militants. Eight people were wounded, including three policemen and five civilians.

Three militants were killed during the attack and one escaped.

Pakistani Taliban spokesman Ahsanullah Ahsan claimed responsibility for the attack in a telephone call to The Associated Press from an undisclosed location.

Notre Dame's Te'o eyes Heisman after Maxwell win

LAKE BUENA VISTA, Fla. (AP) ? Manti Te'o is one of the most important leaders for undefeated Notre Dame, having played in a ton of big games for the Fighting Irish.

Even so, he had a tough time processing this victory.

The senior linebacker was "at a loss for words" after capturing the Maxwell Award as the nation's most outstanding player, one of three honors he received at the 22nd Home Depot College Football Awards show Thursday night at Disney World.

"The last time I ever dreamt of winning that award was on a video game," he said. "So to win it is a mind-blowing experience."

Te'o now has won six major awards since the end of Notre Dame's regular season, also taking home the Bednarik Award for top defensive player and Walter Camp Foundation player of the year award on Thursday. He became the first defensive player to win the Maxwell Award since 1980, ending a string of nine straight quarterbacks.

Next up is the Heisman Trophy ceremony on Saturday night, with Te'o and Texas A&M quarterback Johnny Manziel considered the favorites. Then Te'o will try to help the Fighting Irish dethrone defending champion Alabama in the BCS national championship game.

Wearing a black beaded lei representing his native Hawaii, Te'o said coming back to play football following the deaths of his grandmother and girlfriend just four days apart this season makes everything he's achieved since then more worthwhile.

"I never thought that me coming back for my senior year would be the best situation for me with the tragedy," Te'o said. "It's a testament that the Lord answered my prayers and that I had 80-plus brothers there with me, sacrificing for me."

Te'o finished the regular season with 103 tackles and seven interceptions.

Notre Dame coach Brian Kelly, who was presented with the Coach of the Year award after leading the Irish to their first 12-0 regular season since 1988, said Te'o is an example of the family culture he's tried to build in his three seasons in South Bend.

"Everybody knows you don't do it with one guy," Kelly said. "Collectively, everybody just bought in. ... We still got one (game) left. We want to finish it off the right way."

While Te'o and Notre Dame certainly had a big night, so did Texas A&M. Manziel won the Davey O'Brien National Quarterback Award and junior offensive lineman Luke Joeckel took home the Outland Trophy for the nation's best interior lineman.

Other players honored Thursday were Southern California's Marqise Lee (Biletnikoff Award for top receiver), Tulane's Cairo Santos (Lou Groza Award for top kicker), Louisiana Tech's Ryan Allen (Ray Guy Award for top punter), Mississippi State's Johnthan Banks (Jim Thorpe Award for top defensive back), and Wisconsin's Montee Ball (Doak Walker Award for top running back).

Manziel acknowledged he will be nervous Saturday knowing he has a chance to win college football's most hallowed individual honor. Kansas State quarterback Collin Klein is the third finalist for the Heisman Trophy.

Three sophomores have won the Heisman, including Tim Tebow in 2007, Sam Bradford in 2008 and Mark Ingram in 2009. The best a first-year player has ever done is second.

"I had high expectations, but I never would have expected this for myself," said Manziel, a redshirt freshman. "I'll be with two of the best players in the country, all eyes are on you. It's the biggest award in college football. I think you're gonna have a few butterflies."

Joeckel said even he has been amazed at watching "Johnny Football" and his exploits this season.

"It's hard to protect for someone when nobody knows where he is," Joeckel said. "He's a fun guy to block for."

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin said that type of level-headed poise is what has defined his quarterback all season.

"The way he plays, no moment has been too big for him," Sumlin said.

In one of the non-competition awards presented Thursday, Texas long snapper Nate Boyer was honored with the Disney Spirit Award, given annually to the most inspirational figure or team.

Boyer, a 32-year-old sophomore, earned a Bronze Star for his service with the U.S. Army Special Forces Unit and has also provided assistance to autistic children and Darfur refugees.

Former Notre Dame coach Ara Parseghian was honored with the Contribution to College Football Award for his works off the field.

Kelly said the former coach is every bit as revered as he was in his prime leading the Irish.

"He walks with a limp, but let me tell you, he could still coach today. And he can tell me things about my football team." Kelly said.
