City council gets briefed on the promises of urban agriculture at ...

The Westport Plaza Farmers Market offers locally-grown produce in Midtown. Yesterday, the city council got a briefing on ways it could ramp up urban agriculture; for instance, helping to fund small businesses that could ensure corner grocery stores provide fresh local produce.

Urban agriculture is not just tomato plants in the back yard anymore.?It became a major grassroots movement in the last 15 years and cities need to plan for it just like they plan for streets or buildings, a new report concludes.

The report presented Thursday at the city council business session left council members pledging to do more to help plan and establish city farming and food distribution efforts.

For instance, they said, a fund for small businesses could lend money for corner stores, where many farmers could sell fresh food in neighborhoods where grocery stores are as scant as water in the desert.

The report provides an overview of urban agriculture and food service resources and practices in the United States and parts of Canada. The main goal was to provide ideas and resources that encourage and support urban agriculture in Kansas City, St. Louis and Columbia.

But it also created a searchable public website that shows nationwide efforts, documents, websites and resources related to the matter ? a kind of list of best urban farm practices.

The University Extension Service website collects best practices for urban agriculture.

Mary K. Hendrickson, an associate professor at the University of Missouri Extension, told council members that the web site might be the most important report result.

As urban agriculture has grown so have complexities associated with it, such as? allocating land, capital, water and coordinated efforts among complex city codes and zoning.

Most urban farms are less than one acre but farms up to 100 acres are possible that could gross more than $50,000 an acre and be important economic development tools, the report states.

It notes that a two-acre plot of organic soil in Kansas City, Kan., grosses over $100,000 in sales for the non-profit Cultivate Kansas City, a group involved in one of the proposals to buy Westport High School and Middle School.

A development group said this summer they want to turn the high school into a new pilot private school and that Cultivate Kansas City would use part of the middle school site for training in urban agriculture, a community greenhouse, gardens and orchards.

In August, Katherine Kelly, the cultivate group?s executive director, said it is ?expanding like crazy? and needs an educational space and community interaction site in the city.

On Thursday, Hendrickson told city council members that such expansions are happening nationwide and cities, universities and others must coordinate and plan for them.

Councilman Scott Wagner noted that on a visit to Austin, Tex., he found they had a food policy board for such planning and that some health insurance providers gave prescriptions for fresh fruit and vegetables.

He said the city council is studying allocating land for urban farms and also for institutional buying of food from them.

Councilman Scott Taylor suggested that the $1.5 million fund for small businesses could be used for the corner stores or possibly other urban farm needs.

Councilman John Sharp spoke of a more basic problem in times of hot weather and high water bills.

?One of he issues to deal with is being able to access water in an affordable manner,? he said.

Anna Cruz, 2, dances with her cousin Xavier Curcio,3, at the 46th annual Ragamuffin Parade.

Goblins, ghouls, bumblebees and even Supergirl were on hand Saturday for the annual Ragamuffin Parade in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn.

Hundreds of kids, from tots to teens, marched down 3rd Ave. during the pre-Halloween bash.

And when it comes to costumes, the more unique, the better. Six creative kids won bikes this year for their Halloween garb.

Why It's Bad That Smartphones Have Banished Boredom

I can remember waiting awkwardly in line with other people with nothing more to do then stare at some advertisement or products around me. I, and certainly no one around me, wanted to start up a random stranger dialogue and shoot the shit. This alone caused me to be anxious. I hated waiting because I didn't know what to do, shuffle shuffle shuffle, hands in pockets, out of pockets, sigh, yawn... shuffle.

I welcome the soft glow of my phone. It makes DMV, Passport agency, and anything in a municipal building _just a bit better_. Likely a few years from now an anthropologist will do a study about how fewer people are going 'postal' while waiting in line for some bureaucracy. How after waiting in line a few hours, the ability to play angry birds kept them from thinking about how much money they were going to be docked when they got back to work. It just may save someone's life.

Also, lets not drone on about this 'habitual stimulation' always being entertainment. I see people on the subway who somehow manage to play games and watch videos, but I see just as many reading. Not to say reading can't be entertainment ( or that games and video can't be learning tools ). Just grouping everything people do with their smartphones into 'entertainment' is wrong.

tl;dr: anthropologist overreacts.

FTC Wades Deeper Into Online Child Privacy Thicket

The Federal Trade Commission is working on an update of the rules governing the online collection of personal information, which have remained pretty much the same since 1998. The changes to the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act, however, are likely to do as much to invade children's privacy as to protect it. The proposed changes have been debated since 2009.

Supplements: health benefits or risks | Body Health & Fitness

?

The use of supplements is a practice that should be approached with caution says health experts and ISU trainers.

Kevin Selby, personal trainer and ISU graduate student, said there is wide array of supplements. ? Many are usually vitamins, minerals, herbs, protein, creatine, fat burners and other nutritional supplements.? Most supplements do not have to be approved by the Food and Drug Administration.? There are really no proven facts that state supplements do work.?

?They are said to do many different things such as decrease blood pressure, improve heart health, colon health, digestive health, immune system, you name it. There is said to be a supplement for everything,?? Selby said

According to the September edition of Consumer Reports magazine, it is important to find out information and educating yourself on what you are taking. A quick way you could do that is going to the FDA website. People can also find out about warnings, alerts and supplement recalls. It is also important to report anything bad that happens while people are on a supplement to the FDA so they can research it and possibly shut the manufacturer down if the supplement is dangerous.?

Most supplements are made in countries with little approved standards, Selby said.? More than 6,300 serious of side effects are associated with dietary supplements, including vitamin and herbs were found between 2007 and mid Apr. 2012.? Symptoms include signs of heart, kidney or liver problems, aches, allergic reactions, nausea, pain,? acne and vomiting.?

Selby said it is advised that potential users go to a doctor for more information about minerals and vitamins before taking supplements. People should only take a supplement if a doctor believes that they are not getting enough of certain vitamins or minerals in their daily diets.?

According to Consumer Reports, if people are getting the recommended amount of nutrients by eating a variety of fruits, vegetables, cereals, dairy and protein, than there?s? little benefit from ingesting nutritional supplements

Most doctors will recommend that you should just modify your daily diet and go from there, Selby said. The body is designed to break down food, not pills, for a source of nutrition. Humans are meant to process foods through our digestive systems not chemicals in a pill form.

?Personally, I have used? multivitamins, fish-oil and protein,?? Selby said, ?The reason I used these supplements was because I was not getting them in my daily diet for a while due to being so busy with my schedule. I would say it did work for the amount of time I used them but I would not recommend it.??

Chris Field, junior social studies major and track and field thrower, said he uses muscle milk, creatine and whey protein.

??The supplements I used were supposed to put weight on me, and give me energy,?? Fields said. ?They worked for the most part but going natural isn?t too bad either.?

Selby recommends packing a lunch, bringing healthy meals with you to work or school. He also says to make sure people keep a balanced diet including a variety of fruits vegetables, whole wheat cereals/complex carbohydrates, dairy, fiber and protein.?

Ford offers buyouts to workers in Europe

(AP) ? Ford Motor Co. said Tuesday it plans to cut several hundred salaried workers in Europe as part of a larger restructuring in the money-losing region.

The company is offering voluntary buyout programs in Germany, the U.K. and the rest of Europe. It's also cutting temporary salaried positions and some outsourced services.

Ford stressed that the separations will be voluntary. The Dearborn, Mich.-based company expects several hundred people will leave, but it won't know exact figures for several months.

Europe's economic crisis has hurt car sales, which dropped nearly 7 percent in the European Union in the first six months of this year. Ford also has been hit by an influx of cheaper imports from South Korea after Europe lowered its tariffs on Korean vehicles last year.

Ford lost $404 million in Europe in the second quarter. It expects to lose $1 billion in the region this year.

In addition to the salaried staff cuts, Ford is studying plant closures and other cost-cutting measures. The company has said it is using its North American restructuring ? in which it closed plants, renegotiated union contracts, accelerated new products and laid off thousands of workers ? as a template for Europe.

"I think we have a track record in terms of understanding what needs to be done and having the will and the ability to execute it," Chief Financial Officer Bob Shanks said last week at a conference for manufacturing analysts.

Earlier this month, Ford announced plans to bring 15 new or restyled vehicles to Europe over the next five years to revive sales. Among the new offerings will be the Mustang sports car, EcoSport small SUV and Edge mid-size SUV. Shanks said Ford's lineup in Europe isn't as profitable as it could be right now because it's heavily tilted toward smaller, less profitable cars.

Shanks also warned analysts that the restructuring will take time.

"The recovery of Europe will not be a two-quarter phenomenon," he said.

Ford shares fell 2 percent, or 23 cents, to close at $10.09.

NZ launches inquiry into spying in Megaupload case

WELLINGTON (Reuters) - New Zealand's Prime Minister John Key has launched a inquiry into "unlawful" spying by government agents leading to the arrest of Megaupload founder Kim Dotcom, who is fighting extradition to the United States where he faces charges of internet piracy and breaking copyright laws.

The probe may deal another blow to the U.S. case after a New Zealand court ruled in June that search warrants used in the raid on Dotcom's home earlier this year, requested by the U.S. Federal Bureau of Investigation, were illegal.

Key has asked the government's Intelligence and Security division to investigate "circumstances of unlawful interception of communications of certain individuals by the Government Communications Security Bureau", his office said in a statement on Monday.

Key's spokesman would not comment on whether the "certain individuals" referred to Dotcom, his three colleagues also arrested and facing U.S. charges, or all of them.

"The Bureau had acquired communications in some instances without statutory authority," Key's statement said.

New Zealand authorities arrested Dotcom and his colleagues at his rented country estate near Auckland in January, confiscating computers and hard drives, works of art, and cars.

The FBI accuses the flamboyant Dotcom, a 38-year-old German national also known as Kim Schmitz, of leading a group that netted $175 million since 2005 by copying and distributing music, films and other copyrighted content without authorization.

"I welcome the inquiry by (Key) into unlawful acts by the GCSB," Dotcom said on his Twitter account.

Dotcom maintains that the Megaupload site was no more than an online storage facility, and has accused Hollywood of lobbying the U.S. government to vilify him.

The raid and evidence seizure has already been ruled illegal and a court has ruled that Dotcom should be allowed to see the evidence on which the extradition hearing will be based.

U.S. authorities have appealed against that ruling, and a decision is pending.

With a Struggling Automotive Industry, How do US Cars Shape Up in ...

For many years, most carmakers and automotive experts alike agreed that Asian and European-made vehicles were safer overall than American vehicles. American vehicles, while large, lacked many of the safety features commonly found in Asian or European cars. However, times have changed and many vehicles are manufactured not only for sale and use all over the world, but also manufactured in locations all over the world. Many European and Asian cars are manufactured in the United States, and many American vehicles use parts from Asia and Europe. This has blurred the distinctive lines between car makers, and now, it is harder to determine the safest vehicles.

Luckily, the NCAP in Europe and the NHTSA and IIHS in the United States have strict safety guidelines and tests that they perform on vehicles to ensure the maximum safety of passengers and drivers on the road. While all vehicles must pass the inspection by these companies, there are a few car brands that continually produce the safest vehicles with five star safety ratings in many important categories. When choosing a vehicle for purchase, always try to purchase a vehicle with the highest safety standards possible to remain safe while on the road.

Safety ratings

The NCAP, NHTSA, and IIHS all have a rating system based on the five star system or on a word-based rating system, using words like ?marginal,? ?good,? ?poor,? or ?exceptional.? Vehicles with higher ratings have preformed better in crash tests and will likely perform better in real life crash situations. Car makers often use the safety data provided by these organizations to market their vehicles. Safer vehicles are often sold more often as ?family? vehicles.

Safety tests

The tests that the safety organizations run on the vehicles varies by country, but many of the test are the same. All tests include a rollover test, front impact test, side impact test, rear crash tests and seatbelt tests. The ratings given by the organization indicate the performance of the vehicle in that test. When searching for a car, it is advisable to look for models that perform the highest in as many safety tests as possible.

Safest vehicles

As of 2011, the NCAP in the UK has issued high safety ratings to a variety of vehicles from all over the world. The safest vehicles included models from Audi, Ford, Isuzu, Kia,
Renault, and Volvo. Most of the vehicles on this list are of European make, but two Asian-made vehicles and one American-made vehicle made the list. These car brands all had vehicles with four or five-star safety ratings and performance scores between 67% and 98% for all passengers.

Legal ramifications for crashes

If you are in a car crash, and receive medical symptoms or problems associated with the crash, such as whiplash, it may be possible to receive compensation from your insurance company or even the car manufacturer itself. The compensation for whiplash and other related crash problems can vary, but is designed to help you receive the payment you deserve for your pain and suffering.

As you can see, the vehicles of today are not the vehicles of yesteryear. The lines between what vehicle brands are ?good? and which are ?bad? are vastly different today than in the past. In general, more European-made vehicles remain at the top of the NCAP safety ratings, but they are by no means the only safe vehicles on the road. No matter the brand, you can find a safe vehicle to drive anywhere in the world that will keep you and any passengers safe, even in a dangerous crash.

This is a guest post by Liz Conaty. ?Liz is very interested in the Auto industry, especially in legal issues such as?Compensation for Whiplash.

20. Sonny Bill scores first try in Japan

TOKYO: Former All Blacks centre Sonny Bill Williams showed some of his worth by scoring his first try in three games after a high-priced move to Japanese rugby.

He also threw in a handful of his trademark offload passes, although his Panasonic Wild Knights went down 32-22 to Toshiba Brave Lupus in Tokyo on Saturday, in the fourth round of the 2012-2013 Top League season.

"It's always disappointing when you lose," the 27-year-old New Zealand superstar said after the game before 12,300 spectators at the Prince Chichibu Memorial Rugby Ground.

"It was good to get across the try line but I was really disappointed and frustrated at the end," he was quoted by Kyodo News as saying.

Williams, who helped the All Blacks win the World Cup at home last year, left his national side and Waikato Chiefs to earn a reported $1.2 million for playing 12 games in Japan. Next year he will return to Australia's National Rugby League.

"Toshiba played a forwards game and played well. We just have to be smarter," said Williams, who doubles part-time as a professional heavyweight boxing, according to Kyodo.

"We let in some soft tries and have to go back to the drawing board and listen to the coaches."

Toshiba ran in five tries against three for Panasonic.

Williams, who sat out the season opener and assisted a try in his Japan debut in the second round, drew a huge roar from the biggest crowd of the season when he grounded the ball from a planned line-out in the 24th minute, cutting Panasonic's deficit to 8-10, with a conversion putting the game level.

But Toshiba spurted ahead and never looked back, with former All Black Steven Bates scoring his second try four minutes after half-time.

Bates and veteran Hitoshi Ono combined to put in a great forward effort that limited Williams to defensive duties for most of the game.

Panasonic, the runners-up to Suntory Sungoliath in the Top League and the All-Japan championship last season, stood fifth on the league table with two wins and two losses. Suntory kept their lead with four straight wins for 20 points, including bonus points.

Toshiba also remained undefeated with four wins for 18 points. - AFP

SunWinks! Sunday Gather Writing Essential Sept.... | Gather

Last Thursday, I got a call from the Bedford, the independent living community where my mom and dad live.? They said they?d put Mom in an ambulance and sent it to SW Washington Medical Center.? Carol and I rushed over there.? Mom?d had some numbness and swelling in her arm.? They suspected a TIA (transient mini-stroke).? Mom was in good spirits, philosophical, alert, worrying about everybody else.? The symptoms of the TIA seemed to have come and gone already.

They took Mom to get a CAT scan almost immediately.? Meanwhile, nurse after nurse burst into the curtained cubicle where Carol and I were still sitting, did a double-take, turned on their heels and dashed off again.? One wanted to do an EKG; another wanted to draw blood; there were at least half a dozen.? It got to be pretty funny.? Then a staff member wheeled a gurney into the cubicle bearing a white-haired octogenarian woman.? Carol and I blinked, realized it wasn?t Mom, looked at the nurse and said simultaneously, ?That?s not ours!?

They kept Mom for 26 hours.? They ran more tests than the President gets at Walter Reed Army Hospital.? All were negative.? My mother is as healthy as a horse.? We went straight from the hospital to the Old Spaghetti Factory and celebrated with Dad, two brothers and a sister-in-law.

Consequently, today SunWinks! is pleased to present a guest columnist.? His name is Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. This is from the preface to Bagombo Snuff Box, his collection of previously uncollected stories.? He is talking about how to write a story.? After that, there?s a video (<5 min.) which you simply must watch.? It?s hysterical!

  1. Use the time of a total stranger in such a way that he or she will not feel the time was wasted.
  2. Give the reader at least one character he or she can root for.
  3. Every character should want something, even if it is only a glass of water.
  4. Every sentence must do one of two things?reveal character or advance the action.
  5. Start as close to the end as possible.
  6. Be a sadist. No matter how sweet and innocent your leading characters, make awful things happen to them?in order that the reader may see what they are made of.
  7. Write to please just one person. If you open a window and make love to the world, so to speak, your story will get pneumonia.
  8. Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible. To heck with suspense. Readers should have such complete understanding of what is going on, where and why, that they could finish the story themselves, should cockroaches eat the last few pages.

The greatest American short story writer of my generation was Flannery O'Connor (1925-1964). She broke practically every one of my rules but the first. Great writers tend to do that.

Ms. O'Connor may or may not have broken my seventh rule, "Write to please just one person." There is no way for us to find out for sure, unless, of course, there is a Heaven after all, and she's there, and the rest of us are going there, and we can ask her.

I'm almost sure she didn't break rule seven. The late American psychiatrist Dr. Edmund Bergler, who claimed to have treated more professional writers than any other shrink, said in his book The Writer and Psychoanalysis that most writers in his experience wrote to please one person they knew well, even if they didn't realize they were doing that. It wasn't a trick of the fiction trade. It was simply a natural human thing to do, whether or not it could make a story better.

Dr. Bergler said it commonly required psychoanalysis before his patients could know for whom they had been writing. But as soon as I finished his book, and then thought for only a couple of minutes, I knew it was my sister Allie I had been writing for. She is the person the stories in this book were written for. Anything I knew Allie wouldn't like I crossed out. Everything I knew she would get a kick out of I left in.

Allie is up in Heaven now, with my first wife Jane and Sam Lawrence and Flannery O'Connor and Dr. Bergler, but I still write to please her. Allie was funny in real life. That gives me permission to be funny, too. Allie and I were very close.

In my opinion, a story written for one person pleases a reader, dear reader, because it makes him or her apart of the action. It makes the reader feel, even though he or she doesn't know it, as though he or she is eavesdropping on a fascinating conversation between two people at the next table, say, in a restaurant.

That's my educated guess.

Here is another: A reader likes a story written for just one person because the reader can sense, again without knowing it, that the story has boundaries like a playing field. The story can't go simply anywhere. This, I feel, invites readers to come off the sidelines, to get into the game with the author. Where is the story going next? Where should it go? No fair! Hopeless situation! Touchdown!

Remember my rule number eight? "Give your readers as much information as possible as soon as possible"? That's so they can play along. Where, outside the Groves of Academe, does anybody like a story where so much information is withheld or arcane that there is no way for readers to play along?

The boundaries to the playing fields of my short stories, and my novels, too, were once the boundaries of the soul of my only sister. She lives on that way.

Amen

95% Searching for Sugar Man

All Critics (83) | Top Critics (28) | Fresh (79) | Rotten (4)

The search for a long-lost pop icon has an unexpected payoff.

[A] moving, lyrical account ...

Director Malik Bendjelloul's engaging, cleverly structured documentary about the legendary folk singer Rodriguez is shaped like a mystery.

If you like music, a good mystery or, better yet, a combination of both, you won't be disappointed.

An electrifying illustration of music's power to inspire and change lives on both sides of the footlights.

Submitted for your approval: one Sixto Rodriguez, a Mexican-American singer/songwriter whom Rod Serling would surely embrace, in or out of the Twilight Zone.

Searching for Sugar Man reminds us that a wise man knows lasting riches are never the result of record sales.

Searching for Sugar Man" is a saga about the power of music, living life on one's own terms and the joy of second chances.

Two fans, Stephen Segerman and Craig Bertholomew, made it their business to find out exactly what happened to the singer Rodriguez. And, "Searching for Sugar Man" is the fruits of their labor. The fruit is tasting pretty sweet.

It starts as a bittersweet parable about the cruelty of commerce, but the wonder of "Searching for Sugar Man" will not soon slip away.

You watch "Searching for Sugar Man" at first fascinated by the mystery - what happened to Rodriguez? Where did he go? Then you become infuriated by its revelations of financial injustice.

An unexpectedly fresh nonfiction tale that rustles up deep feelings of a life stolen -- part docu-mystery, part uplifting valentine about the universality and resonating power of music.

Generates immediate interest in a forgotten artist, permitting the delicate yet barbed tunes to guide the experience, returning a sense of excitement to a man who unfortunately missed out on the highlights of his career.

It isn't that Searching for Sugar Man's plot developments are gotcha!-like, but this documentary does boast some bowl-you-over reveals best experienced blind.

Ultimately, for Rodriguez, musical redemption transcends the greed and soul-sapping breaks he encountered.

Rodriguez's life story is only part of what makes "Searching for Sugar Man" such a revelation.

The man and his music are worth checking out, even if the movie is not.

Ultimately an ode to Rodriguez's artistic modesty and the power of his music-a rousing crowd-pleaser that asks you to save questions for another film.

A rousing and all-encompassing look at a man who becomes even more of a mystery after we've gotten to know him.

New turtle tracking technique may aid efforts to save loggerhead

The old adage "you are what you eat" is helping scientists better understand the threatened loggerhead turtle, which is the primary nester on Central Florida's beaches.

A study published today in the journal PLOS ONE describes how scientists at the University of Central Florida used a technique that links chemical signatures of the turtles' diets and their watery environments to their migratory routes. They found the technique just as effective as expensive satellite tracking.

Little is known about the turtles, which spend 99 percent of their time in the water and return to the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge's beach to nest once every two to three years. The 13-mile-long beach is home to the second-largest population of loggerheads in the world and to about one of every four nests those turtles lay in the United States.

While other turtles' nests are increasing along the refuge's shores, the loggerheads' have been declining since 2000. The technique validated by the UCF scientists could help managers preserve the turtles' nesting grounds, migration routes and foraging grounds, all of which are critical to their survival.

"We need good information so policy makers can focus the limited conservation funds available where they can make the greatest impact," said Simona Ceriani, the UCF graduate student who led the study. "We all want our children to see these beautiful creatures and not just read about them in a book."

In addition to validating the tracking technique, the study found that the foraging area for the Florida turtles is much broader than previously thought.

"Think of these turtles as Florida tourists and snowbirds," Ceriani said. "They come and nest and then go back to lots of different places. And while we knew some went back north, we had no idea that this was a popular destination."

Based on her tracking, some turtles head for the water off the shores of Virginia and Delaware while others go to the Bahamas and the Gulf of Mexico. Some stay off the coast of Central Florida's beaches. Previously, scientists believed the majority of the loggerheads headed south.

While there are efforts to protect the turtle nests on the beaches, protecting their foraging grounds is equally important, biologists say. Many turtles die because they accidently get caught in fishing nets or encounter other dangers while out at sea.

The technique Ceriani validated should aid those efforts.

She took small blood samples from turtles at the refuge and completed a chemical analysis, which measured distinct markers known as stable isotopes. She also attached transmitters to the turtles so she could follow them using the more expensive but proven satellite tracking technique. The isotope approach proved to be equally useful, and it is much less expensive.

"By combining isotope research with satellite tracking technology, we are learning exciting information about loggerhead sea turtles," said Daniel R. Evans, a research specialist at the Sea Turtle Conservancy and co-author of the research paper. "This research helps scientists and conservation managers identify key feeding areas for loggerhead turtles and helps direct policy and regulations that protect sea turtles in these specific areas."

Ceriani said she will continue to research the migratory routes by adding more loggerheads to the study.

###

Ceriani earned her bachelor's degree at the University of Milan in Italy and was a research fellow at Florida Atlantic University before joining UCF's PhD program in conservation biology in 2007.

Others who contributed to the study include: UCF Biologist, John Weishampel, James D. Roth from the University of Manitoba in Canada and Llewellyn M. Ehrhart from the Marine Turtle Research Group at UCF.

Several grants from Florida's Sea Turtle Grants Program funded this study. The program gets is funding from the sale of the Florida Sea Turtle License Plate.

Sea turtle monitoring at the Archie Carr National Wildlife Refuge was coordinated through the University of Central Florida Marine Turtle Research Group, with funding from Brevard County, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and the United States National Marine Fisheries Service.
